The Temple of the Inscriptions and Temple XIII at Palenque

Palenque

Pakal’s city and your base

Palenque is where almost every Yaxchilán journey begins. The town itself is a busy crossroads, but a few kilometres away, on the first hills of the Chiapas mountains, lies one of the most beautiful of all Maya cities — the capital of K’inich Janaab Pakal, whose tomb inside the Temple of the Inscriptions was found by Alberto Ruz in 1952.

Palenque and Yaxchilán belonged to the same world of rival kingdoms linked by the Usumacinta and its tributaries. Visiting both — with Bonampak in between — gives a vivid picture of the Classic Maya west. Spend at least two nights in Palenque: one day for its ruins and waterfalls, one for Yaxchilán.
