The Usumacinta river seen from a boat on the way to Yaxchilán

Best Time to Visit Yaxchilán

The dry season, roughly November to April — but here is the month-by-month detail.

Yaxchilán lies in the lowland rainforest of eastern Chiapas, where it is hot and humid all year. There are two seasons: a drier season from about November to April and a rainy season from about May or June to October, when heavy afternoon storms are common. The site is open all year, and the boats run in every season.

Dry season: November to April — the best time

Less rain, drier paths, fewer mosquitoes and pleasant mornings on the river. December to February are the most comfortable months; March and April are hotter, often well above 30 °C at midday, but still dry. This is also the best time for the turquoise water at Agua Azul.

Rainy season: May/June to October

Rain usually falls in heavy afternoon bursts, the forest is at its greenest and the river runs high and fast. Tours still run, but paths are muddy, mosquitoes are fierce and storms can delay boats. September is typically the wettest month. Mornings are often fine, so start early.

Time of day beats time of year. Whatever the month, be on the first boats. You get cooler air, softer light in the forest, active howler monkeys — and you are back on the river before the afternoon storms.

Crowds

Yaxchilán is never really crowded. The busiest times are the Christmas and New Year holidays, Semana Santa (Easter week) and the July–August Mexican summer holidays, when Palenque hotels also fill up — book ahead then.

What to pack by season

  • Dry season: hat, sunscreen, light long sleeves, plenty of water, a light layer for early mornings on the river.
  • Rainy season: a light rain jacket or poncho, a dry bag for your phone, shoes with grip and strong insect repellent.
  • Always: a torch for the Labyrinth and cash in pesos.

Yes. Tours run all year. Expect afternoon storms, muddy paths and mosquitoes — start early and bring rain gear and repellent.
