The Best Yaxchilán Tours

Seventeen tours and trips, ranked by what they actually deliver — not by who pays us most.

We rank these on four things: time at the ruins, what is included (fees, meals, the boat), value for money, and what travellers say afterwards. Ratings and review counts come straight from GetYourGuide and are checked regularly. Yaxchilán tours naturally have fewer reviews than beach excursions — that reflects how remote the site is, not their quality.

We earn a commission if you book through the links below, at no cost to you — which is why the ranking is what it is rather than what a supplier would like it to be.

How we rank these tours

We look at four things, in this order:

  • Time at the ruins. A tour that gives you an hour at Yaxchilán after three hours on the road has short-changed you.
  • What is included. Entrance fees, the community fee, Lacandon transport at Bonampak and meals can add up.
  • Value. Not the lowest price — the most experience per dollar.
  • What reviewers say afterwards. We read the critical reviews, not only the glowing ones.
Our honest advice: if you can spare two days instead of one, take them. The one-day tour is a long haul with a lot of time on the road; the two-day version adds a night in the rainforest and lets you see both sites unhurried.

Take the boat to the Maya city in the jungle

An hour down the Usumacinta, howler monkeys in the ceibas and the carved temples of the Jaguar kings — plus Bonampak’s murals on the same day. Compare Yaxchilán tours from Palenque and book in a couple of taps.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Yaxchilán tour?

For most people, the most-reviewed one-day Yaxchilán and Bonampak tour from Palenque. If you have two days, the two-day tour with a cabin night at Lacanjá Chansayab is even better.

Is a day trip to Yaxchilán too long?

It is a long day — typically 12 to 15 hours — with around six hours on the road. It is very doable, but if you have the time, splitting it over two days is more enjoyable.

Do Yaxchilán tours include entrance fees?

Some do, some do not. Check the “includes” list on each listing; if fees are not included, bring enough Mexican pesos in cash.

Are tours available in languages other than English and Spanish?

Occasionally, especially on private arrangements. French, German, Italian or Portuguese guiding is not standard — ask the operator before booking.
